“Brezel da Sala” – The name of the new Romanian store that is making headlines among Italians. A bakery opened in Cuneo, Piedmont, run by two women, mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, Beatrice and Loredana Agignoaiei. The name hides a story dear to their soul. The business was named after Loredana’s 3-year-old daughter, who is also named Sarah.
Loredana and Beatrice worked hard to make their business successful
Crisp, fragrant, knotted, ring-shaped bread is typical of Germany. You’ve probably seen them served with beer and sausages at Oktoberfest stalls. However, not everyone knows that it is also very popular in Romania.
The ingredients are few and simple, as is often the case with the best recipes: flour, salt, sugar, oil, water and yeast. However, the recipe is a family secret and comes straight from Romania, where Beatrice already ran a pretzel shop. She has already been in Italy for her four years and her daughter-in-law arrived in Italy twelve months after her. “Here in Cuneo, life is very good.”.
Two Romanian ones boast classic versions with salt, but they also have sunflowers, sesame seeds, poppy seeds and even Nutella. “Today we have chocolate biscuits, but we also have a wonderful apple strudel. It depends on the ingredients of the day.”.
Loredana, 31, and her mother-in-law, Beatrice, 52, wake up at 4 a.m. every morning to prepare and serve thousands of customers beyond the threshold. “Many Romanians come, but also Italians and Albanians. In short, any nationality!”.
